The ‘Battle of the Concerts’ is gradually coming to the foreground of the presidential elections, as the three main candidates aim to close their campaigning with a bang.
A fortnight ago the Tassos Papadopoulos camp was embarrassed following Greek singer and composer Mikis Theodorakis’ public declaration in favour of AKEL candidate Demetris Christofias.
Theodorakis and his orchestra were booked (and had signed the relevant contracts) to headline the February 8 music extravaganza organised by the Papadopoulos camp.
However, following Theodorakis’ public announcement of his support for the Christofias candidacy, the Papadopoulos camp had to change their tune and book Stavros Xarhakos as a replacement for Theodorakis.
Now, Theodorakis will sing at Christofias’ pre-Valentine concert which is scheduled to happen on February 13 at Eleftheria stadium.
It is worth noting that the Christofias camp had not planned another concert, following the December and January concerts they already held, which were headlined by Vasilis Papaconstantinou and Thanos Mikroutsikos.
But with a heavyweight like Theodorakis available, the opportunity was too good to be missed, coming as a vital final push before the elections, and also as a counterweight to the big events organised by the two rival camps.
Needless to say, the Papadopoulos camp is unhappy with this latest episode in the ‘battle of the concerts’, a battle which they seem to be losing not only on who they’ve booked but also on the dates chosen.
The Papadopoulos concert is taking place nine days before the first round elections of February 17, whereas the other two candidates are holding their concerts in the final week.
On February 12, a day earlier the Eleftheria Stadium will be moving to the tunes of the Kasoulides concert.
It is not yet clear what format the Kasoulides event will take and when we contacted the Kasoulides camp, only to hear that, “when we have something to tell you, we will release a press report.”
Politis has claimed that the camp’s initial choice of Xarhakos has already been taken by Papadopoulos, while Michalis Hadjigiannis and Dionysis Savvopoulos declined the invitation.
