29.07.05: Three days of festivities in Chania (Crete)


The Prefect of Hania, George Katsanevakis, and the Deputy Prefect of Hania, George Agorastakis, gave a press conference at the Prefectural Hall of Hania, during which they announced the basic body of events organized by the Prefectural Administration of Hania in honour of Mikis Theodorakis’s 80th birthday.

As the Prefect of Hania underlined:

Mikis Theodorakis's father is a native of the city of Hania, where his 80th birthday will be celebrated with many great events. The people of Crete, and especially the people of Hania, is greatly indebted to Mikis Theodorakis, whose work, personality and life stance made our music, values and culture known throughout the world. His 80th birthday this year gives us the opportunity to show him our gratitude with all the honour due to him.

The Prefectural Administration of Hania is responsible for the organization of the main events in Hania.

The Deputy Prefect of Hania declared in turn:

“In July, the city of Hania will host many people from all over the world who lived with Mikis, who know his work and activity very well, who are eminent scientists, artists, politicians who will lay bare their knowledge and experiences with the ‘man phenomenon’ Theodorakis. Important artists and performers/interpreters of his songs will share with us the emotions and appeal of his music.”

As far as the programme of events is concerned, it is divided in 3 basic sections:

1. An International Conference entitled:

Mikis Theodorakis:
Man, Artist, Musician, Politician;
Native of Crete and Citizen of the World.

The conference will take place on July 29, 30, and 31
at the Cultural Centre of Hania
The official opening of the Conference will be on Friday, July 29, at 18:00 pm

The Conference is organized by the Prefectural Administration of Hania
and sponsored by the Greek Parliament
and the Union of Prefectural Administrations of Greece
in collaboration with the Cultural Centre of Hania
and the “Development S.A.” company of the Prefecture of Hania

2. A great Concert will be given at the National Stadium of Hania, on July 31, 2005 at 21:00 pm – entitled “Let’s celebrate Mikis” – by the Popular Orchestra “Mikis Theodorakis” and with the soloists George Dalaras, Nena Venetsanou, Sonia Theodoridou, Dimitris Basis.

The concert will be open to the public (free entry)

3. Mikis Theodorakis’s fellow-villagers will celebrate his 80th birthday with a Cretan feast on the night of July 29, in the square of Galatas village, Mikis’s father's birthplace. The feast is organized by the Municipality of Nea Kydonia.

Both the Prefect of Hania and the Deputy Prefect of Hania concluded by remarking that
“other authorities of Hania, but also of other areas of Crete have also undertaken to organize events in honour of the great composer, that will take place all the year round. 2005 is the year dedicated to Theodorakis for the whole of Crete.”
