13.04.05: Maria sings Mikis

Maria Farantouri
The famous Greek singer Maria Farantouri, accompanied by composer, arranger and pianist Henning Schmiedt, gives a unique recital of songs by Mikis Theodorakis for his 80th birthday at Centre des Arts Pluriels d’Ettelbruck (CAPe), Luxembourg, Wednesday, 13 April at 20h00.

Maria Farantouri is universally recognized as the ideal interpreter of Theodorakis's music. Her rich contralto voice, with its broad range and melodic quality, combined with a fine musical intelligence make her a superb exponent of the composer's wide range of musical styles. Her first great success came in 1964 with MAUTHAUSEN.

As soon as the dictators had taken over the power in 1967, Maria had left Greece and joined the struggle against the dictatorship by giving thousands of concerts all over the world.

She kept Theodorakis's music alive during the seven years of the military dictatorship when it was banned in Greece, playing an important role in the movement for the revival of Greek music.

Among Maria's most important interpretations of Mikis Theodorakis are CANTO GENERAL, a setting of the poetry of Pablo Neruda, who watched the rehearsals himself, ROMANCERO GITANO, a setting of poems by Federico Garcia Lorca, adapted in Greek by the Nobelist poet Odysseas Elytis, KYKLOS FARANTOURI, and many songs which became world famous thanks to her.

Apart from her artistic activities, Maria Farantouri has always been very much involved in the cultural and political life of Greece. She was a member of the Greek Parliament from 1989-1993 representing the Panhellenic Socialistic Movement (PASOK).

Her exceptional song recital in Ettelbruck will be the starting point of a new great song tour. It is given in the frame of the exhibition Mikis Theodorakis, witness of our epoch at the National Centre for Literature in Mersch (until 22 April 2005). Maria Farantouri plans to visit the exhibition while she is in Luxembourg.

The concert is placed under the patronage of the Greek Embassy, in collaboration with the Press office of the Greek Embassy in Luxembourg.

Tickets: 20, 16 et 10 EUR. Booking: CAPe(26 81 21-304) and Billetterie Nationale(47 08 95-1)

The same concert will be given Thursday 14.04. at PARADISO, AMSTERDAM
