"Lyricotata" - Poems

Mikis, Yannis and their mother (1947)
Yannis Theodorakis
THE DREAM OF THE NIGHT

On each of your eyelids a dream
And all the dreams together a sea without shores.
From its golden waves I give you a sign
you must close your eyes
a typhoon is near
sending crashing down stories long since over.

The hand you laid on my fever
is the dream for the hour that holds in safe keeping
the sea-gull that I sent you and that is waiting for you.

Yannis Theodorakis
THIS SUMMER

Stone on stone
in between lurks the cool scorpion
Sun, burning, high above
and down below the sea.
Salty the wind
traces my life in the sand.

Read it, before it's stolen from you
before sea-weed and shells steal it from you
with glistening drops of the storm
I will love you in the summer.

For the hour that holds in safe keeping the sea-gull
that spreads out the night
for all the humble and wretched,
all the as yet unknown and forgotten.
