A Message from Yannis Simonides

Yannis Simonides and, behind him, Costas Spiliadis at Restaurant Milos, 22.10.2000 (Photo: © Guy Wagner)

For individuals or institutions of vision, the grandest gestures are sometimes the easiest to make.

When Socrates and Eleni Kokkalis were asked to help make possible this extraordinary collaboration between Mikis Theodorakis, Charles Dutoit, and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra they did not hesitate. For them, for the Intracom Group of Companies, and for the Kokkalis Foundation, this unique artistic event - at this particular moment, in this city - made perfect sense and bode well for similar, future bold and imaginative projects. They acted promptly and decisively and provided the momentum necessary for the successful procurement of funding. We salute them gratefully, and we pledge the continuation of the North American Foundation's singular policy: the presentation and promotion of modern Greek art in mainstream venues, in association with institutions who share our propensity for risk-taking, flair, and informed collaboration.

Yannis Simonides
President of the North American Foundation for Modern Greek Arts
