Filoktidis Economidis
|
1957, two years after the First Suite, Theodorakis composed a new version of his early piece Oedipus Tyrannus as a tribute to his former teacher, Economides, who died in that year.
Again it was to Greek folk melody as well as to the modes of the Orthodox Liturgy that Theodorakis turned for inspiration.
The piece is scored for three violins, one viola, cello and double bass.
It was performed in 1970 at the Albert Hall by members of the London Symphony Orchestra and recorded together with March of the Spirit.
Oedipus Tyrannus is a solemn, moving piece.
The use of Greek modal material is integrated into a tonal composition which still belongs to the world of the concert hall.
