The end of a long musical confrontation...

The Concert-rhapsody for Solo-guitar and Orchestra in seven parts stands in the end of a long musical confrontation.

First, Theodorakis set to music, in 1967, a cycle of seven songs on texts by Federico Garcia Lorca, in the adaptation the Greek Nobel Prize Odysseas Elytis. The title of this work: "Romancero Gitan", corresponds to the one, Lorca had given to his anthology.

Fourteen years later, 1981, Theodorakis orchestrated these songs, and the issue was a symphonic work for alto, choir, solo guitar and orchestra, with the title "Lorca". This composition was a commission of the "Komische Oper" Berlin, where it was created with Maria Farantouri as singer and Costas Cotsiolis as the solo guitarist, conducted by Rolf Reuter. Maria Farantouri also has been the first interpreter of the song-setting of 1967, which, since then, she has sung in hundreds of concerts world-wide.

Finally, the work was again arranged for guitar and symphony orchestra by the composer in the middle of the nineties. Theodorakis wanted to offer to guitarists a well playable instrumental work - freed from the burden of the voice - , in which the guitar predominates from start until end. The guitarist also slips into the role of the commentator as well as into the one of the "decorator", exploring all possible techniques of the guitar. The melodic material is mainly played by the orchestra.
